Pride Men's Chorus London presents RISE UP!pridemenschorus.ca
**This show was rescheduled from Saturday, April 25th. All tickets purchased for the previously scheduled performance will be valid for this performance.**
Pride Men’s Chorus London invites you to a rich and inspiring concert in celebration of the Pride movement. Although LGBTQ+ rights have grown to laws that guard equality in Canada, much of the world still struggles and promotes persecution. In our own country, there is still much work to be done to help “Change Hearts and Minds” to embrace the strengths of a diverse society.
Did you know that a device developed during the 1950’s and 1960’s in Canada by Frank Robert Wake was supposed to identify gay men as “fruits”? It was designed to eliminate all gay men from the civil service, RCMP and military. The RCMP collected files on over 9,000 suspected “gay people”. Lives and careers where ruined as a result of this barbaric practice.
It was only 15 years ago that Canada became the fourth country in the world to allow same-sex marriage and seven years ago that human rights protection was extended to transgender and transsexual people.
This concert will feature the powerful song, “Testimony,” composed by Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,” “Pippin,” “Wicked”) for San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, featuring lyrics inspired by the “It Gets Better Project.”
Also, on the program are anthem songs such as “Proud,” “I Sing Out,” and “We Rise Again,” as well as special arrangements of “A Love That Will Never Grow Old” (from “Brokeback Mountain”). One of the most powerful works on the program is “Michael’s Letter to Mama from the book and mini-series, “Tales of the City” by Armistead Maupin. In this work, Michael asks his homophobic mother to come to terms with his identity and embrace him for who he really is. Other exciting features include PMCL’s interpretations of favourites from Barry Manilow, Simon & Garfunkel, Pet Shop Boys, Andra Day, the Judds.
Come help us celebrate and experience the power of music to tell our story and build our community!
