Sunfest Presents Amanda Martinez
Amanda Martinez is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter who celebrates her Mexican and South African roots through an effervescent cocktail of Latin jazz, folk and flamenco. Amanda’s bright, sultry vocals and upbeat sound reflect her motto that if you can dream it, you should begin it — that we all have gifts to share.
Amanda’s solo CDs have garnered multiple Juno nominations for Latin Jazz Performer of the Year, and her songs have appeared on three Putumayo world music collections. Her third and latest CD, Mañana, was helmed by Grammy-winning producer Javier Limón, who hails Martinez as "one of the greatest voices in the world."
This endearing Latin songstress has headlined at New York’s legendary Blue Note Jazz Club, and in front of over 30,000 cheering soccer fans at the 2010 FIFA World Cup festivities in South Africa. During the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games, she was active as a performer and host, and served as honorary co-chair of its Ignite program.
Amanda has worked as a radio host/producer (launching Café Latino on JAZZ.FM 91 Toronto), TV personality (BRAVO Arts & Minds, Star TV, CBC’s PANAMANIA), and actress (ReGenesis and Disney's Life with Derek). She currently hosts and co-produces Ingredients for a Good Life, a show designed to promote Mexico to Canadians.
Amanda is an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages, a global organization that helps abandoned and orphaned siblings stay together. Fittingly, in late 2014, the Hispanic Business Alliance and Canadian Hispanic Congress selected her as one of the Top 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians.
