For more than a decade, Reuben and the Dark has become one of Canada’s most distinctive voices in modern folk and indie rock, building a catalogue of songs that blur the line between intimate confession and communal anthem. Led by Calgary songwriter Reuben Bullock, the project has earned an international following through its emotionally expansive songwriting, cinematic sound, and live performances that transform audiences into choirs.

Raised in the foothills of southern Alberta, Bullock grew up surrounded by wide-open landscapes, long winters, and a family whose love, struggles and resilience would become lifelong sources of inspiration. Before Reuben and the Dark emerged, he spent years writing songs while fronting local bands and working construction jobs, slowly developing the lyrical honesty and emotional depth that would come to define his work. In 2014, the release of the band’s debut album Funeral Sky introduced a songwriter capable of pairing deeply personal stories with soaring, cathartic arrangements. Songs from the record quickly found audiences around the world through film, television and streaming, establishing Reuben and the Dark as one of Canada’s breakout independent acts.

Over the years, Bullock has continued to expand the project’s musical vocabulary across acclaimed albums including Arms of a Dream (2018), Unlove (2019) and In Lieu of Light (2022). While each record explores different emotional terrain, they share a common thread: an unwavering belief that vulnerability can be a form of strength, and that even the darkest experiences can become places of connection.

That philosophy has taken Reuben and the Dark across North America and Europe, sharing stages with artists including Mumford & Sons, Vance Joy, Boy & Bear, The Paper Kites, and Half Moon Run, while performing at major festivals and headline shows throughout Canada and abroad. Along the way, the band’s music has appeared in dozens of film and television productions—including Ted Lasso, Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, Station 19, The Order, The Last of Us, and El Camino – introducing Reuben and the Dark’s songs to audiences far beyond the concert stage.

What has remained constant is Bullock’s commitment to writing from lived experience. His songs frequently explore grief, faith, addiction, healing, love and the search for meaning – not as abstract ideas, but as realities navigated in real time. Whether performing with a full band, in collaboration with Indigenous Powwow group, Bullhorn Singers, or alone with an acoustic guitar, he approaches songwriting less as performance than conversation: an invitation for listeners to find pieces of themselves inside someone else’s story.

That impulse reaches its fullest expression on If You Know Me You Know My Brother. Completed shortly following the death of Bullock’s older brother, the album is both his most personal work and his most liberating. Many of its songs were written over more than a decade, finally finding their place after years of waiting. Free from outside expectation and proudly self-releasing for the first time, Bullock embraced what he calls his “I stopped giving a fuck” record – a collection rooted in family, memory, forgiveness and the enduring power of human connection.
