Gwen’s workshop will bring her lifetime of teaching and incredible insights to ORMTA London members and guests.  A number of chosen students will perform from middle and senior grades.  Gwen will highlight technical/physical elements of performance finding solutions for technical/musical challenges.  She will also use her vast experience to focus on stylistic and interpretive elements of each work featured during this unique event.

Gwen Beamish has received national recognition as a performer, teacher and adjudicator. Originally from Saskatchewan, her early teachers in Toronto and Europe include Boris Berlin, Boris Roubakine and Alexander Uninsky. Later, she received a master’s degree in performance from the University of Michigan, studying with Theodore Lettvin and Eugene Bossart. Gwen delights in performing and talking about the works of Robert Schumann and has also performed many Canadian works. She has been heard on the CBC, and has performed twice at Carnegie Hall in an anniversary concert for the Adamant Music School.

Gwen is a longtime faculty member at Western University. She taught for many years at the Banff Centre where she helped form the Gifted Youth Program. She has also spent summers teaching, performing and giving lecture-recitals at Courtenay, B.C., Sudbury, Ont., and Acadia University in Nova Scotia. Since 1988 she has been on the faculty of the Adamant Music School in Vermont, serving as Executive Director in 1990. She was invited to give master classes at the Athens Conservatory, Greece in 2004. Gwen also maintains a private studio in Sarnia working with teenagers and coaching piano teachers. In 1991 she received the Special Teacher Award from the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association. In 2011, she was awarded an honorary Licentiate by Conservatory Canada.

She has twice been president of the Canadian Music Festivals Adjudicators’ Association, and has served as an adjudicator from coast to coast in Canada and the U.S.  Gwen has also been a judge for competitions such as the Spokane Festival of Fine Arts, International Young Keyboard Artists, National Music Teachers Association (U.S.), the Eckhardt-Grammatté and Contemporary Showcase.

Gwen enjoys the variety of her musical life. In addition to solo recitals and Canadian chamber concerts at Western, she regularly presents master classes for young pianists, workshops for piano teachers, and serves as an adjudicator for music festivals and competitions throughout Canada and the U.S.
