Recording at The Aeolian

“Music is Life. Music is Community”

Aeolian’s renowned acoustics and state-of-the-art technology make us the ideal choice for your next video or audio recording. A significant grant, awarded to the Aeolian Hall Musical Arts Association in 2020 was transformative in shifting our scope from presentation to professional recording capabilities with the gift of new sound, light and video recording technologies and a professional recording studio on our ground floor.

We provide professional livestream services as well as fully edited video rendering for television or the internet and audio recording ready for digital distribution on your preferred platform.

Our team will work with you before your recording to understand your needs and storyboard your artistic vision. We can provide volunteer services including an artist liaison to support musicians and their team. We have two Green Rooms with salon quality lighting for hair and make-up. We can also provide additional space for rehearsal before soundcheck or to rest between takes, including a private outdoor garden.

Aeolian works with some of the best restaurants in London and can suggest or assist in ordering catering services on the day of your production.

Our professional sound, light, and camera technicians will arrive early and ensure that the recording space is ready for you. Upon arrival you will receive assistance with load-in, make any final adjustments, and move right into sound check, rehearsal and the recording on your schedule. We can provide rehearsal space, pending availability in the days or hours leading up to your scheduled recording.

Whether you are looking concert hall acoustics or the sound of an intimate studio, we can achieve your goals in a COVID-19 safe environment.

Recording during performances

The Aeolian is a legendary and historic venue renowned for its acoustic qualities.  There are hundreds of recordings in existence showcasing showcasing its unique qualities.  This includes renowned artists such as Buffy Sainte-Marie who used the venue to record for her recent autobiography.

Aeolian Production:

If an agent, manager or artist requests recording of a live concert, there is no obligation for The Aeolian to comply.  Keep in mind that the Aeolian employs the artist(s) to give a live production show and does not pay artists to record for personal gain.  Should the Aeolian deem that they will agree to allow recording of a live performance, these are the possible scenarios.

  1. The event is negotiated for livestream using Aeolian equipment with additional tickets for sale as part of the total negotiated contract.
  2. The event is recorded for a future date as part of a special Aeolian production (like the Aeolian Phoenix Sessions).  In this case, the fee paid to the performer(s) takes into consideration potential future revenues and is adjusted accordingly.
  3. The event is recorded by the agent, manager or performers for promotional use only using up to 25% portions of the live concert.  The Aeolian is happy to allow this without charge but permission must be obtained.
  4. The event is recorded for release in entirety without commercial gain and solely for promotion.  The fee for this is $200 if the performer uses their own equipment or is allowed to get a mix off of the house sound board.   This fee includes both audio and visual recording.  Permission to set up cameras in the hall at strategic locations without blocking fire exits or traffic must be obtained from management.  Normal recording rates apply if the Aeolian Recording Studio equipment and services are used.  The release of this material is not permitted to be marketed in advance of the aeolian production date.  The Aeolian requires a three month period between the live show and the recording release in order to mitigate potential sales loses.  The rational:  If a client knows that the show will be released later for free, why would they pay for a ticket to see the live show?
  5. The performance is release for commercial purposes at a negotiated later date.  The fee for this is $1000.00.  The future date must be no less than 6 months from the time of the Aeolian performance.  The Aeolian is under no obligation to comply with this request.
  6. Equipment must not be attached to walls, railings or any other permanent or temporary Aeolian structures or property.
  7. The Aeolian must be credited in all recordings whether allowed for free or paid.

Recording during rental events

  1. Recording during rentals must be negotiated at the time of the rental contract.
  2. Recordings using Aeolian equipment follow the policies and fees set out in “Aeolian Recording Studios”.
  3. Recordings using outside equipment: location of equipment must be pre-approved by management and must not obstruct fire routes including exits and aisles.  The equipment must not obstruct any client views of the performance.
  4. Equipment must not be attached to walls, railings or any other permanent or temporary Aeolian structures or property.
