So long Summer. Hello…Oktoberfest and Germany!!

We start our fall jazz season Sunday with a step into early German cabaret!

Remember the movie Cabaret and Joel Gray as the MC?  That era, between the end of the 1st World War and the rise of the Third Reich in the early 30s is known as the Weimar period in Germany.  On Sunday we pay tribute to the women of Weimar Berlin and the music of the 1920s with Moderne Frau, featuring jazz vocalist and German devotee Adi Braun from Toronto.

Adi was born in Toronto and grew up in Germany; her father Victor Braun was one of Canada’s leading baritones. Adi trained classically at the Royal Conservatory of Music and at University of Toronto.    She began her singing career as a classical recitalist, a solist with orchestra and on-stage in operas and operettas and also teaches German art song at the Royal Conservatory of Music.  An she is a German diction coach of the Canadian Opera Company.

She started ‘singin sideways’ in the late 90s, moving to what she calls ‘cabarazz’.  Her sophisticated vocal style and delivery evokes such greats as Sarah Vaughan, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney.

Just last year she combined her love of German and Germany with her jazz roots and her 5th CD “Moderne Frau” was released.

We invite you to something completely different Sunday afternoon with Adi.  A step-back into another era with the songs of Kurt Weill and others of the time period.  The music evokes the times.

And to recognize Oktoberfest, now in full swing in Munich, we will be offering some fine German beers at the bar.

PS:  This is not the required dress for this show!  Wear what you want!

I’ll be back here shortly to sketch out the rest of the Aeolian’s fall jazz program.

Till then, keep lovin’ live music
